Chapter Five

Rosalie woke in bed, dressed in her usual nightgown. The sun had just begun to peek over the distant tree line, but she felt wide awake. And full of questions. The primary question circling in her mind was, why her? Why did the spirit of Edward Lockmorrow choose her as his object of affection?

The question continued to linger in her mind, as she dressed for the day and made her way down to the kitchen. When she walked through the kitchen door, the cook turned to look at her. An expression of surprise flickered across her face, before she smoothed it into a pleasant smile.

“Good morning, Miss. I was just preparing your breakfast tray.”

Rosalie followed the cook’s gaze to a silver tray on the table. They were going to bring her breakfast in her room?

“Oh,” she murmured. “Thank you, but I think I will eat in the dining room.”

“Of course, Miss. We only thought you may need the rest this morning,” the cook said with a blush.

Rosalie eyed the woman in confusion. It almost seemed like she knew about Rosalie’s encounter with the spirit. But how could she?

“Is Agatha awake, yet?”

“Yes, Miss. She is taking her breakfast in the morning room. Would you rather dine with her?”

Rosalie forced a smile. “Yes, please.”

She wasted no time leaving the kitchen, eager to get away from the blushing woman. Rosalie took a moment to calm herself before she walked into the morning room. Agatha was sitting facing the window, rather than her usual spot at the head of the table. She calmly looked up from her plate when Rosalie entered.

“Ah, Miss Chambers. You look well this morning.”

Rosalie blinked in surprise when the lady of the house gestured for her to sit in the chair to her right. The head of the table. Rosalie hesitantly crossed the room and settled into the chair. For a long moment, Agatha watched her in silence.

“I owe you great debt, Miss Chambers,” she finally said.

Rosalie frowned. “A debt?”

“I know I should have told you the moment you arrived. No, before that. When I wrote to ask for your services.” Agatha took a sip of her tea. “But I feared you would not come if I told you about my brother.”

“Your brother?” Rosalie echoed, feeling out of step.

“The late Duke of Kellingsworth.”

Rosalie could feel her face growing hot. She dropped her gaze to the table. “I see.”

“Edward was my older brother,” Agatha continued. “When he died in the war, he left everything, the entire estate, to his niece, my daughter Abigail.”

Rosalie stared at her. “I apologize, but I do not see what this has to do with me.”

Agatha smiled faintly. “Do you remember visiting London ten years ago?”

Rosalie frowned. Ten years ago? It must have been when she went with her mother and sister to have dresses made for her sister’s presentation at Court. There had not been enough money for her own presentation, but she was expected to accompany her sister to fashionable places in the city to keep up the appearance of wealth.
